For a school leader, the first day after a long summer break is a very exciting one. School leaders often do not get the same leave as others. One has to take care of the campus needs, repair, maintenance, new facilities, renovations and all. Yes, summer sports activities, excursions, projects also go hand in hand with a small group of students.
For the principal, therefore, the first day offers an opportunity to welcome the staff and students, introduce them to the changes that have taken place in their absence, thank them for the work they have done and exhort them for readying up to the challenges of the new term. It was as in the past a wonderful sight to see them all coming in, some with excitement, some with reluctance. When asked if you regret the vacation is over, one gets a mixed response. Good to know the places they visited during the vacation- short trips on pilgrimage, to hill stations to beat the heat in Delhi, to some exotic destinations abroad. Holiday homework was a bit dampener, this remains a debate unending, to give or not to give homework, how much and what will be discussed in the media for the next few weeks. By this time around 1100 am, things seem to be settling down, arrival noise subsidizing to the level of school discipline. As I reflect, the stream of young children is dropping in my room with birthday sweets.
