Last evening was an exhilarating experience. Attended a felicitation ceremony for the successful candidates from the minority community in the civil services examination. The Zakat Foundation headed by Dr Zafar Iqbal organised the function. Justice Sachhar presided over the function. The 14 young officers came from humble background, difficult upbringing and most unlikely possibilities. They even had difficulty travelling to Delhi from far off places in Kerala, West Bengal, Jharkhand and all. They all had amazing stories to share. One girl from WB is the highest scorer in the interview. Another boy from Kerala, who made it to the coveted services in his third attempt, has already helped a dozen others successfully. But the one I am deeply touched about is the story of Yasin Choudhry from Jammu DPS which I headed when he was a student. He graciously acknowledged my presence and whatever little role I may have played. He recalled my advice to his father some 13 years ago to encourage Yasin to read. I did have my moment of pride in Yasin's accomplishments. The young boy, IIT graduate now IAS has turned out to be a very fine young man. I wish him great success.
I am often reminded of a story wherein someone asked a teacher what do you make? And the teacher famously said I make human beings. It is truly said the God made teachers make good human beings.
