I was asked recently by an educational consultancy firm to suggest means to capture quality parameters in a school. Generally, the results of the public examination at the end of school years is taken as a measure of the quality of teaching-learning in the schools. Given the inadequacy of the assessment process and the limitations and academic accomplishments, focus on annual result alone cannot be taken to measure the quality outcomes. The quality of school life, students and other stakeholders experience, is a far greater determinant of the richness of what students learn than anything else. Schools must be encouraged to devote their energies to the following 6 areas to enhance learning experiences and preparing students for good citizenship; 1. Health and physical well being. 2. Life skills, attitude and values. 3. Art & culture. 4. Inclusive education. 5. School, family, community partnership. 6. Integrating International dimension.
Schools must develop a vision and a policy around these. A matching infrastructure, well trained human resources, planned activities and above all a committed leadership can ensure the overall success. The best part of promoting these learning opportunities is that all these activities could be integrated across disciplines. Thereby making academic studies more enjoyable and relevant.
